About City

Amsterdam has a long and eventful history. The origins of the city lie in the 12th century, when fishermen living along the banks of the River Amstel built a bridge across the waterway near the IJ, then a large saltwater inlet. Wooden locks under the bridge served as a dam; protecting the village from the rising IJ-waters, which often flooded the early settlement. The mouth of the river Amstel, where the Damrak now is, formed a natural harbour, which became important for trading-exchange from the larger kogge ships into the smaller ships that sailed the merchandise deeper into the hinterland.

Amsterdam is the capital city and most populous city of the Kingdom of the Netherlands. Its status as the Dutch capital is mandated by the Constitution of the Netherlands though it is not the seat of the Dutch government, which is The Hague Amsterdam has a population of 832,563 within the city proper, 1,328,085 in the urban area and 1,601,653 in the metropolitan area The city region has an approximate population of 2,431,000

Amsterdam is a place where it is has large house of Museums, music, arts, sports, festivals. Amsterdam" is usually understood to refer to the municipality of Amsterdam. Colloquially, some areas within the municipality, such as the town of Durgerdam, may not be considered part of Amsterdam.
